Easter Ideas

The Easter Season is seven weeks long.  Keep up the Easter spirit with ideas in this space updated weekly.

Try these Easter Puzzles together (New April 21) Easter word search/concentration game and Holy Week Picture Puzzle Talk about the order of events during Holy Week.  Talk about the meaning of the Easter words.  Make your own puzzles and games together for a fun family time activity.

NEW LIFE Mosaics (New April 7).  How many symbols of new life can your family name?  There are no right or wrong answers as long as  you can explain your answer.  On a sheet of clear Contact paper draw outlines of your symbols using bright colored sharpie markers.  Next, tear up colorful tissue paper into small pieces.  Peeling the backing off the Contact paper a little bit at a time, fill in the drawings with the tissue paper.  Leave plenty of room around the edges of the paper for the next step.  Stick your paper to windows or glass doors around  your home for a "stained glass" reminder of your new life in Christ.

In Remembrance of Me (click) NEW MARCH 31.  This is a neat twist on random acts of kindness and a great reminder of Jesus' example of service, especially during the Last Supper.

What to do with the plastic eggs:

Have egg rolling contests. Prep:  fill each egg with a symbol of the Easter story (cross, donkey, rock, nails, empty, etc)  Part one: Do a scavenger hunt to find all the eggs.  Part two: Use a spoon, or  your nose, to race your eggs to a predetermined finish line. Part three: open your eggs into the middle of the table.  Time how fast the egg roll winner can put the pieces in a logical order to tell the Easter story.  Finally, how many ideas can your family come up with to use your plastic eggs?

Make a nail craft.  Using any type of nails and pieces of plywood, pound the nails into the outline of a cross, butterfly, or other Christian symbol.  Use pretty ribbons to wind around the nail and complete the picture.  Be sure to help younger children with the hammer.

Refresh your memory

Under each dinner plate or chair place an object, picture or a word that has to do with Holy Week.  For example, a coin, a picture of a donkey, a nail, a cross, a rock, and so on.  During dinner have family members discover what is under their chair and talk about what it represents.  Try to put the objects in order.  Afterward, reward each family member with a minute.  Give each person one or two minutes to talk about whatever is on their mind.  It's their turn.  Don't interupt.  This is a great practice for every night of the year.

The value of a family meal can't be overstated.
