News for Nurturing the Faith

All Saints Lutheran Church
Volume 9 Issue 5 April 6, 2008

Dear Parents and Friends…

As we continue to celebrate the joy of Easter and our Lord’s Resurrection. The children will begin learning about the longest season of the church year and help All Saint’s celebrate the birth-day of the church, Pentecost! Please be sure to attend worship on Sunday, May 11 because in addition to being Mother’s Day it is the day of Pentecost.

All grade school aged children have been challenged to memorize the memory verses for the year and on our final day of Disciples’ Workshop Sunday School (May 4th) we will allow any child to accept this challenge. (All verses are printed below.) Though the real reward will be later in life, when they will be challenged with a hardship and the words of scripture will be on the forefront of their minds, instant gratification is nice too, therefore all children who have memorized the verses will be awarded with a medallion. Help your child learn the verses not simply for the instant reward, but for their faith walk through their life.

And I must finish this with all thanks going to God for the wonderful adults and teens that have volunteered this year to teach and serve the children of All Saints. I look forward to next fall when the children will learn about Joseph, his coat, his brothers and his life in Egypt. May God bless you and have a safe and wonderful summer.

May God bless you this Advent with a true heart of preparation for the coming of our Lord.

In Christ,
Rendy Horner, Director of Sunday School

Memory Challenge

Memory Verse Challenge

Children are given the opportunity during this last rotation to recite memory verses from the year. Those who have memorized all of them (and still know them) will be rewarded with a medallion. Please review the memory verses listed below with your child(ren) so they too can participate in this event.

DWSS Memory Verses:

Abraham & Sarah Rotation- I will give you many descendants, and they will become a great nation. I will bless you and make your name famous, so that you will be a blessing. Genesis 12:2 (GN)

Noah Rotation- The rainbow that I have put in the sky will be my sign to you and to every living creature on earth. It will remind you that I will keep this promise forever. Genesis 9:13 (CEV)

Advent Rotation- As the shepherds returned to their sheep, they were praising God and saying wonderful things about him. Everything they had seen and heard was just as the angel had said. (CEV)

Lost & Found Rotation- But we should be glad and celebrate! Your brother was dead, but he is now alive. He was lost and has now been found. Luke 15:31 (CEV)

Jesus’ Last Days on Earth Rotation-“I am the way, the truth, and the life!” answered Jesus. “Without me, no one can go to the Father.” John 14:6 (CEV)

Pentecost-The “Birth” Day of the Church- God’s Spirit makes us sure that we are his children. His Spirit lets us know that together with Christ we will be given what God has promised. Romans 8:16 & 17 (CEV)

Living the Promise

Dear Parents,

Pentecost is sometimes referred to as the birthday of the church. During the days leading up to Pentecost the disciples saw Jesus and really went through their final preparations to go out and spread the good news. 2000 years later we are still commanded to share God’s love and the good news of Easter. We must still go forward proclaiming Jesus’ as savior, knowing that God will give us the words. But the end of Lent shouldn’t be the end of a commitment to activities of our faith. Help set an example for our children by committing to on-going adult education for yourself, worship with your children, devotions and acts of service and faith nurturing for the entire family.

In His Service,

Bobbie Tomasek, Faith Journeys

Volunteering for Sunday School

Volunteers can serve where they feel their gifts are best used. They can be Teachers, Shepherds or Prepare Materials:

  • Workshop Teacher Disciples’ Workshop Sunday School:
Do you enjoy cooking? Cooking could consist of mixing up and baking fish shaped cookies to teach the children about the big fish that swallowed Jonah or drying fruit that could have possibly been eaten on Noah’s arc. If Art is more your style you could help the kids create a “water jug” out of clay to symbolize the jug that the Woman at the Well may have used. Art can be many different ways to express their creativity.

The lessons were written by volunteers. The lessons teach what All Saints feels is important to the children. The lessons are written in script form so there is no guesswork as to what to say or do. But if you are a creative teacher you are not expected to “read” the lesson but instead put a little bit of yourself in your lesson. Most rotations last from 4 to 6 weeks and that is the length of your commitment. All of the materials are prepared for you so there is no cutting, gluing or preparing the night before. You teach the same lesson to a different age of kids each week --  no “last minute” studying. Prior to most all the new rotations a training luncheon is held allowing you to read the lesson plan, ask questions and then prepare yourself for the following week’s teaching.
  • Little Saints Sunday School Teacher:
If you enjoy the spirit and words of the little ones, this is where you would best fit. Like the teacher of the older kids you teach the same lesson to a different age of kids each week so there is no “last minute” studying. Prior to most all the new rotations a training luncheon is held allowing you to read the lesson plan, ask questions and then prepare yourself for the following week’s teaching. All of the materials are prepared for you so there is no cutting, gluing or preparing the night before…  To spice up and just have fun, we have party days where the kids play games, eat fun food and periodically go outside and play with a large parachute. There is lots of fun in teaching these little ones because they are so innocent and are like sponges soaking up everything they see and hear.
  • Shepherd:
If you like to be around kids but are not comfortable with a teaching role then shepherding is your ticket! This person is truly the child’s friend and face they see every week. There are a few responsibilities that are not taken lightly. The shepherd must arrive 15 minutes prior to the service to greet the children and must be able to smile at thought of change. Each week is a little different because each week the teacher is different so you must be able to be flexible and supportive while encouraging the kids. You also have the role of taking attendance, making sure all announcement papers go home and certain that the parent or caring adult who dropped the child off is the same person who picks the child up.
  • Material Preparation:
If you are more of a “behind the scenes” type person then you are welcome to help prepare materials needed for Sunday mornings. This could involve cutting, gluing baking and more…each workshop is different so the needs are different. Most of the supplies needing prepared can be taken home and done at your leisure…we do have a wonderful group of ladies that prepare materials the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 9am in the Fellowship Hall. They are true angels and would love to have you join them.
